Hello everyone, today I’ll be sharing about Math Day or National Mathematics Day which is observed in honor of the legendary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan Aiyangar. The main motive behind celebrating this day was to raise awareness of the importance of mathematics in the development of the world and humanity in people’s minds.

When is National Mathematics Day celebrated?

National Mathematics Day is celebrated on 22 December every year on this day Srinivasa Ramanujan Aiyangar was born and in his honor, this day was inaugurated in 2012 by our Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

About Srinivasa Ramanujan Aiyangar

Srinivasa Ramanujan Aiyangar was born in Erode, Tamil Nadu on 22 December in 1887, it was this day when we got our mathematics genius. Ramanujan was the man who gave more than 3500 formulae in mathematics which till now haven’t been completely proved by the greatest scientists. 

Education of Srinivasa Ramanujan Aiyangar

Formally Ramanujan didn’t get an education in mathematics. He got his degree of Bachelor’s in Science from Trinity College in 1916 he was selected at the London Mathematical Society in 1917. Ramanujan was elected a fellow of Trinity college in 1918. 

Contribution in mathematics

Ramanujan contributed to mathematical analysis, infinite series, continued fraction, number theory. He also sent 120 mathematical theorems to his professor.

Ramanujan gave several ideas and concepts to solve the mathematical problems. He was also elected as Fellow at the Royal Society in 1918 when he researched Elliptic Functions and Theory of Numbers.

Death

Srinivasa Ramanujan Aiyangar died at the age of 32 as he suffered from Tuberculosis. In the year 1919 he returned to India because of his illness and on 26 April 1920 he took his last breath.

How is National Mathematics Day celebrated?

To pay tribute to Ramanujan’s contribution to mathematics Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the Madras University in 2012 declared this day as the National Mathematics Day as it was the 125th birth anniversary of Ramanujan.

Every year different types of educational events and competitions are held on this day in schools and colleges throughout the country and students also learn about his theories, his equations, and especially his Pythagorean theorem. In Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh Ramanujan Math Park was opened in 2017 for this day’s significance.
