What is Mathematics, Branches of Mathematics, and How to Solve Maths Problem?

Mathematics is one of the oldest subjects, which has its origins in ancient times. Being one of the oldest subjects, it is a subject of numbers, data, measurement, shapes, and other logic.

It is also a foundation for subjects like physics, chemistry, statistics, finance, medicine, and others. In simple terms, we can say the world stops running without applying mathematics and its principles in different areas of development the world has witnessed today.

How can we define Mathematics?

Mathematics is a subject that helps us to solve problems and enhance our confidence to study and gain knowledge in different aspects. Our understanding of mathematics helps us solve a variety of problems in academics as well as in real life.

For example, your day starts with numbers right from seeing the time, watching cricket scores, bargaining with the vendor, exciting about sales offers, calculating your grades, etc. This way, it functions, and its applicability is just inevitable in the walk of your daily life.

How does Maths help you in your real life?

  • Mathematics is a Life Skill.
  • Mathematics is all about solving various problems by applying logic.
  • As a student, it helps you understand and solve different problems, improving your logical reasoning skills.
  • Solving math problems is one of the best brain exercises you can do in your daily routine.
  • The formulae and concepts in math are also adopted for subjects like physics, chemistry, economics, statistics etc. And the concepts of Math follow even if you are a non-science student.
  • In most of the competitive exams held today, the role of Mathematics has become critical in deciding the success rate of the candidates.

Different Branches of Mathematics

As mentioned already, Mathematics is a vast subject with different branches, and that’s how it functions. Let us see what the different branches of Mathematics are.

  • Number System: The number system is the representation of any data using numbers and digits. Using number systems, you can perform different calculations like counting objects, subtracting the numbers, multiplying the numbers, counting averages etc.
  • Algebra: Algebra is one of the ancient areas of mathematics that deals with number theory, geometry, and analysis. It can also be defined as the study of mathematical rules and symbols through the manipulation of those mathematical symbols. It helps us derive unknown quantities like proportions, percentages, bank interests, etc.
  • Geometry: It is an area of mathematics that deals with the angles, shapes, dimensions, and sizes of different objects. It is divided into three segments. In plane geometry, two-dimensional objects like triangles, squares, rectangles, and circles are referred to as flat shapes. 3D shapes like a cube, cuboid, cone, etc., are also known as solids in solid geometry. In coordinate geometry, points, lines, and planes are the building blocks of fundamental geometry.
  • Calculus: Calculus is another area of mathematics that studies continuous change. It is also termed the infinitesimal calculus or “the calculus of infinitesimals.” Most of these quantities are time functions, such as velocity, which is equal to the change in distance over time. Derivatives and Integrals are the two major concepts of calculus.
  • Topology: Topology is the study of the characteristics of spaces that are unaffected by continuous deformation. Because the objects may be stretched and contracted like rubber sheets yet cannot be broken, it is frequently referred to as “rubber-sheet geometry.” For example, figure 8 cannot be bent into a square without breaking it, whereas a square can. As a result, a square is not an 8 but is topologically equal to a circle.
  • Trigonometry: Trigonometry was introduced by a Greek mathematician, Hipparchus. It studies the correlation between the sides and angles of a right angled-triangle. The trigonometric formulas, functions, or identities can help determine the missing or unknown angles or sides of a right triangle. The angles in trigonometry are expressed as either degrees or radians. 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90° are some examples of computation of trigonometric angles.
  • Probability and Statistics: Probability and Statistics are two important interrelated topics in mathematics. Probability speaks all about chance, and statistics uses various techniques to handle various forms of data. Using statistics, we can understand data more efficiently.

Approach to solving a math problem

Now that you have understood the different areas of Mathematics. Let us see the general approach to solving a math problem.

  • Read, Read, and Reread Problem: First, pay attention to the question before you begin solving a math problem. Read the question again and again, to link it with the concept you have studied. After identifying the concept to which it relates, underline the numbers and other essential information.
  • Create Visual Representation: In this step, draw a diagram and create a visual representation by highlighting the critical information after understanding the problem. It helps you focus completely on the problem you wish to solve.
  • Plan of Attack: Now, you should clearly understand the problem you are solving. So, now, it’s time to solve the problem but think of the approach you should use to solve the problem. Try to remember the easiest approach and start solving the problem.
