HBCSE Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO IMO) Online Class, Preparation and Guidance?

You need to know that once you qualify for the preliminary stage, which is IOQM, you will be promoted to the Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO) which is the second stage of the IMO contest. RMO is a three-hour exam that includes six problems.

The RMOs are conducted in English, Hindi, and other regional languages as determined by the individual Regional Coordinators. The questions need a high level of complexity, comprehension, logical reasoning, and sophistication, so you need to prepare well on all the syllabus topics.

RMO Registration Process

Those who qualify in the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM) 2024-25 are eligible to participate in the Regional Mathematics Olympiad 2024-25

Eligibility criteria for RMO:

To be eligible to appear for RMO 2024, you must obtain at least 10% of the total marks on the IOQM 2024 paper; however, this is not the only qualifying condition.

If you get at least 10% of the total marks on the IOQM 2024 paper and you are enrolled in one of the classes 8, 9, 10, or 11, you will be classed as a Category A student while if you are registered as a class 12 student you will be designated as a Category B student.

Now, kindly note that the list of students who qualify for the RMO 2024 will be assembled according to the following rules:

  • The top 200 students in Category A, as well as those tied for the 200th spot, will qualify for RMO 2024.
  • The top 40 students from Category B will qualify for RMO 2024, along with those tied in the 40th spot.
  • Additional girl students from Category A, regardless of the number of girl students scoring in the top 200 students from Category A, will be eligible for RMO 2024 under the Girls’ quota while on the other hand, there is no specific girls’ quota in Category B.
  • A girl student from Category B can qualify for RMO 2024 through IOQM 2024 if she is chosen as one of the top 40 students in Category B, as indicated in the previous section.

RMO Exam Pattern and Syllabus

In the RMO exam, you will encounter a total of six descriptive mathematical problems, each worth 17 marks. The exam is conducted offline and lasts for three hours. You are required to attempt all the questions, and your answers will be evaluated based on their accuracy.

If your answers are partially correct or incomplete, you will receive step marking, which means you can still earn marks for the correct steps or partial solutions you provide. Additionally, be aware that regional coordinators have the option to set their question papers for the RMO or use one provided by the National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM).

Frequently asked questions about RMO

Q. Is the RMO subjective or objective?

A. The RMO (Regional Mathematics Olympiad) is completely subjective. This means that you will be required to solve descriptive problems and provide detailed solutions. Unlike the PRMO (Pre-Regional Mathematics Olympiad), which is entirely objective and consists of multiple-choice questions, the RMO focuses on your ability to demonstrate in-depth understanding through written responses.

Q. What is the duration of the RMO exam?

A. The RMO exam lasts for 3 hours. It is an offline examination where you will need to manage your time effectively to complete all the descriptive problems within this time frame.

Q. Who is eligible to take the RMO?

A. Eligibility for the RMO includes students from classes 8 to 12. The RMO is a regional-level exam and serves as the second step towards participating in the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO). It is conducted in various regional centres across India.

Q. How can you qualify for the RMO?

A. To qualify for the RMO, you must first clear the PRMO (Pre-Regional Mathematics Olympiad), which is the initial stage of the International Mathematics Olympiad. Success in the PRMO allows you to advance to the RMO, and performing well in the RMO is a critical step towards representing India on an international stage.
